What happens in a Feldenkrais® session?
In a private Feldenkrais session, known as Functional
Integration® (FI) you will usually be lying down, comfortably clothed
on a low padded table. The
practitioner will use gentle movements, and hands on work in very
precise ways designed to allow your nervous system to release chronic
or acute habits and patterns of tension or overwork, creating more
comfort, freedom, and adaptaility in your system.
What brings people to the Feldenkrais Method®?
People come to the Feldenkrais Method for many
different reasons, falling loosely into two different categories.
1. The desire for relief, from
chronic or acute discomfort from sources as varied as:
- stresses, strains and tensions of daily life
- misalignment or injury
- chronic pain, fatigue or debilitation from
fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, multiple sclerosis, or
cereberal palsy
- scoliosis
- developmental delays, or learning disabilities
in children
2. The desire to improve skill,
satisfaction and effectiveness in a particular area of expertise
or love.
- performing artists
- athletes
- visual artists
- creative artists
What benefits will I experience after a session?
Everyone reponds differently. Some common responses
people have is to feel lighter, taller, more balanced, more fluid,
a greater sense of well being, physically, and emotionally.
Additionally there are often secondary benefits,
maybe not the ones you came in for directly, that can be as varied
as finding you have better concentration, endurance, creativity,
or spontaneity.
How long will it take to experience results?
Many people feel
a significant difference and improvement after one session. For
some people, it may take up to four sessions to feel a clear and
significant change.
How often should I come for sessions?
The average frequency is once a week. However,
if you are in severe or acute discomfort it may be useful to come
twice a week for several weeks, or if you are taking the group classes
(Awareness Through Movement® (ATM) it can be very useful to complement
the group lessons with a private lesson once a month.
How long will the results last?
Although the results of the Feldenkrais Method are often experienced therapeutically, it is primarily an educational
method, meaning that you are educating or reducating your neuromuscular
system to function in a more optimal way. In the beginning the results
may last anywhere from a few hours to a few days, but, with regular
reinforcement over a period of time the new learning will become
more and more integrated into the way you function on a daily basis,
and, you will learn tools to help you retain and recall the improvements
when you need to.
